St. Petersburg was different from all of other cities in Russia at the time; the city is the result of the adoption of French culture and refinement. Its father, Peter I the Great, was very successful in establish a modern European city on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The young Tsar with a revolutionary mind wanted to transform a Russia with many conservative ideas in 18th century; he went to more developed countries to learn how to lift his country in a modern way. A glorious city by the sea is one of his dreams. Best architects, engineers and artisans from Italy and France were invited to build St. Petersburg. And, the dream of the young Tsar came true.

St. Petersburg is very unique because in this city, the typical Russian architecture was replaced by the Gothic; castles with pointed arches were replaced by colonnaded buildings and major elements of gothic architecture were prominent in many buildings. WINTER PALACE

Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, the Winter Palace,built in 18th century, used to be the official residence of Russian Monarchs from 1732 to 1917. This is a must-see and it would be foolish to miss when visit St. Petersburg. To day, The Winter Palace is turned into the Hermitagio Museum. The Museum stores more than 3 millions masterpieces of Russia and also Europe from the classic to contemporary periods.

THE SUMMER PALACE

The Summer Palace is a perfect example of Baroque from the year 1710. It is characterized by its tones of blue and gold studded exterior. There are many marble, mirrors, glass and gold color presented everywhere in the palace. This is a historical place tourists should visit in St. Petersburg.
